Pellet flight & gravity
Even over 10 m, the pellet is falling the whole way.
Ignoring drag, a pellet crosses the range at constant speed, so its flight time is t = d ÷ v. While it flies, gravity pulls it down by ½ g t². Sights are set (zeroed) for the target distance, so that drop is built into the aim: you never see it, but it's there.
| Pellet speed | Flight time | Gravity drop | Pellet energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 m/s | ≈ 67 ms | ≈ 21.8 mm | ≈ 5.6 J |
| 175 m/s | ≈ 57 ms | ≈ 16.0 mm | ≈ 7.7 J |
| 200 m/s | 50 ms | ≈ 12.3 mm | 10 J |
175 m/s: t = 10 ÷ 175 ≈ 0.0571 s; drop = ½ × 9.81 × 0.0571² ≈ 0.016 m. ISSF rules set 10 m air events at 4.5 mm (.177) calibre.
At 160 m/s, how long does the pellet take to cover 10 m?
10 ÷ 160 ≈ 63 ms.
