# Kinetic · Recreational flying: sources and verification notes

All checks done **3 Oct 2026 (IST)**. "Verified" means the official page or document was loaded and the stated fact was read on it, unless noted otherwise. The page deliberately shows **no prices, fares or fees**. Each operator, school and club is linked to its own site (or a news report where none exists), where readers should check current courses, approvals and dates.

Scope: gliders (sailplanes), hang gliders, microlights and light sport aircraft, paramotors and powered parachutes, and hot-air balloons on one page. Paragliding has its own sibling page (`../paragliding/`), linked from the hero, chapters, ladder, bodies and where-to-go.

## 1. Physics (chapters, quiz, Balloon Lab)

| Claim | Basis |
|---|---|
| Lift L = ½ρv²SC_L; drag; glide ratio = L/D; sink = speed ÷ L/D; level-flight power = drag × speed; climb = excess power ÷ weight | Standard aerodynamics and flight mechanics (textbook). Worked numbers computed by Kinetic |
| Typical glide ratios: paraglider ≈ 8–10, hang glider ≈ 10–16, training sailplane ≈ 25–35, high-performance ≈ 45–60, microlight engine-off ≈ 7–12 | **Typical round ranges** (general knowledge, not fetched); labelled "vary a lot between models" |
| Thermals typically ≈ 1–3 m/s; sink around thermals 1–2 m/s; ridge and wave lift | General soaring knowledge (**not fetched**) |
| Example aircraft: 450 kg microlight (15 m², 25 m/s, L/D 10 → ≈ 441 N, ≈ 11 kW); 400 kg sailplane (L/D 40); 110 kg paramotor (L/D 6 at 10 m/s → ≈ 180 N, ≈ 1.8 kW); propeller efficiency roughly 60–80% | **Illustrative** values, not specific aircraft; computed |
| Hot-air buoyancy: ρ = P/(287.05·T); gross lift = V(ρ_out − ρ_in); 2,800 m³ at 100 °C: 781 kg (15 °C), 905 kg (5 °C), 559 kg (35 °C), 916 kg (120 °C inside), 652 kg (1,500 m) | Ideal-gas law + International Standard Atmosphere (computed) |
| Equipment mass 0.14 kg per m³ of envelope; 80 kg per person, pilot included; 120 °C slider limit | **Illustrative assumptions**, stated on the page; real limits come from the manufacturer and operator |
| Cloud base ≈ 125 m per °C of temperature/dew-point spread | Meteorology rule of thumb (**not fetched**) |
| Density-altitude table (430 m and 1,500 m at various temperatures); speed factor √(1.225/ρ) | ISA formula (computed) |
| Load factor n = 1/cos(bank); stall speed × √n; stall speed ∝ √weight | Standard flight mechanics (computed) |
| "About 11 kW ≈ a typical 150 cc motorbike engine" | Approximate comparison (general knowledge) |

## 5. Left out / judgement calls

- **Grouping:** one page for five aircraft types, ordered by physics (unpowered wings → soaring → buoyancy → engines → weather → control). Paragliding stays on its own sibling page and is cross-linked, not duplicated.
- **Ladder:** six steps by what a beginner can actually do next in India: passenger → school-described no-licence powered categories → hang gliding → DGCA glider licence → DGCA microlight/LSA licence → DGCA balloon licence plus FAI/Aero Club of India sport. It is a learning path, not an official progression.
- **No flying-hour or age minimums** for DGCA licences: not verified on an official page.
- **Agni Aero Sports Adventure Academy (Jakkur, Bengaluru)** left out: its site's data ends around 2010, so current operation couldn't be verified.
- **Flying Monkeys** left out (site fetch timed out). **NCC gliding/microlight** left out (cadets only).
- **No prices, fares, fees or tie-up line**; no emails or phone numbers.
- **The Balloon Lab is illustrative.** It is not a load or flight-planning tool; the page says so.
- A hidden, empty `#gear` placeholder sits before the footer for a future Gear section (not built).
