# Kinetic · Ice skating: sources and verification notes

All checks done **3 Oct 2026 (IST)**. "Verified" means the official page was loaded and the stated fact was read on it, unless noted otherwise. The page deliberately shows **no prices**. Some rink pages list fees, but we link to the rink's site instead. Rink emails and phone numbers are also left off the page.

## 1. Physics (chapters, quiz, Spin & Jump Lab)

| Claim | Basis |
|---|---|
| Melting-point slope of ice ≈ −0.0074 °C per bar (Clausius–Clapeyron) and the pressure-melting worked numbers | Standard thermodynamics; numbers computed by Kinetic. Contact areas (200 mm², 50 mm²) are **illustrative** |
| Premelting / quasi-liquid layer; Faraday 1859; review | R. Rosenberg, "Why is ice slippery?", *Physics Today* 58, 50 (2005), doi:10.1063/1.2169444 |
| Frictional heating (Bowden & Hughes 1939); direct detection of warming elusive | Cited and discussed in Atila, Sukhomlinov & Müser (below) |
| Friction minimum ≈ −7 °C, same as speed-skating rinks; softer ice above −7 °C | B. Weber et al., *J. Phys. Chem. Lett.* 9, 2838 (2018), doi:10.1021/acs.jpclett.8b01188; confirmed via the University of Amsterdam release on phys.org: https://phys.org/news/2018-05-slipperiness-ice.html (PubMed returned 403) |
| Meltwater film hundreds of nm thick, viscosity far above water ("comparable to oil") | L. Canale et al., *Phys. Rev. X* 9, 041025 (2019), doi:10.1103/PhysRevX.9.041025. **Abstract via search index** |
| Cold, displacement-driven amorphisation; metal conducts heat > 20× better than ice | A. Atila, S. V. Sukhomlinov, M. H. Müser, "Cold self-lubrication of sliding ice", arXiv:2402.10843 (published in *Phys. Rev. Lett.* 135, 066204, 2025). Full text read on arXiv |
| μ ≈ 0.005 for skate on ice; drag areas 0.5 / 0.25 m²; moments of inertia 3.0 → 0.8 kg·m²; arm as 4 kg point mass | **Illustrative** round values, typical orders of magnitude; not measurements |
| Lean angle tan θ = v²/(gr); L = Iω; KE = ½Iω²; projectile airtime; landing force 1 + h/d | Standard mechanics (computed) |
| Hollow grind, rocker, toe picks; snowplough/T-stop/hockey stop; rink refrigeration and resurfacing; ice tuned harder for speed/hockey | General skating and rink knowledge, not fetched from one source |
| Natural-ice thickness: under 4 in (10 cm) stay off; 4 in on foot; white ice half as strong | Minnesota DNR, https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ice/thickness.html (loaded) |

## 4. Where to skate

| Venue | URL | Facts used | Status |

## 5. Left out (could not verify) or judgement calls

- "Asia's oldest/largest natural rink" claims for Shimla are common online but not verified, so they're left out.
- Other Indian rinks (e.g. in Dehradun, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru malls) were not listed. We couldn't confirm a current, working official page for each this pass.
- ISAI's own learner test levels and coach-certification system: not found on its site, so not listed.
- ISAI national championship dates for 2026–27: not published when checked.
- The Learn to Skate USA ladder is used as an international **reference**, not as something Indian rinks follow; the page says so.
- The frequently quoted "Learn to Skate USA is the official programme of U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US Speedskating" was not confirmed on the pages read, so it's not stated.
